Disclaimer: I know all the fans got mad about the adaptation and I’m currently reading the books, so I’m going to base only in the movie not as a fan of the books.
(Spoilers ahead!)
The Gunslinger is chasing The Man in Black (MIB), seeking revenge. In his way, he founds Jake, a kid from New York City in the called Keystone Earth (our planet, our dimension). They have to stop MIB from destroying the Dark Tower, a interdimensional building that protects all the worlds from the darkness outside its territory.
The story is about two opposite forces: good and evil. The good ones are defended by The Gunslingers, cowboy warriors that protects the Dark Tower; the last of they is Roland Deschain and he is trying to defeated the bad ones and revenge his father. The bad ones are rat-like-with-false-human-skin minions and the leader is The Man in Black (a.k.a. Walter Padick).

The MIB is a dark figure that travels across dimensions and kidnaps children. If we see this, we can imagine some boogeyman’s like Krampus, witches, El Coco, Baba Yaga, Kappa, etc. He whispers into the people and introduces bad emotions, uses mind control to kill people, has telekinesis, pyrokinesis (fire control) and creates illusions. This magic that uses is kind of representative of the devil of the Bible. The motives also are representative because he wants to separates the worlds from the light and rule the world of demons and darkness.

And The Gunslinger tries to defeat the evil and darkness, motivated by the good of his father. A Jesus-like figure. He travels through a dessert trying to find the devil (The MIB) and the finds illumination, a child that has “the shinning” and can help him. So he continues his travel to defeat evil. In the final round, he is wounded by the MIB in the hand, then in the other hand. He has stigmas. And, with the help of the shinning and the calmness that brings the memory of his father, Roland kills the MIB and saves Jake. To bring peace to the worlds.
